Understanding Your Retainers
Congratulations on completing the active phase of your orthodontic treatment! Wearing and caring for your retainers is the final step in maintaining your beautiful new smile. Following the instructions below will help keep your teeth in their new positions for years to come.
PROTECT YOUR NEW SMILE FOR YEARS TO COME
Keep Your Smile Looking Its Best
RETENTION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TREATMENT
The first phase of your orthodontic treatment may be complete, but maintaining your results requires ongoing retainer wear. Teeth naturally have a tendency to shift over time, so wearing your retainers as instructed is the best way to preserve your new smile.
To help prevent damage, always insert and remove your retainers using both hands. Avoid using your tongue or biting them into place, as this can twist or crack the retainer over time.
Wearing Your Retainers
FOLLOW THESE THREE PHASES OF RETENTION
Full-Time Wear
01
Wear your retainers all day, every day for at least two weeks after your braces are removed. They should only be removed when eating, drinking anything other than water, or participating in sports that require a mouthguard. Consistent wear during this period helps stabilize your teeth in their new positions.
12 Hours Per Day
02
After the initial two weeks, reduce your retainer wear to 12 hours each day for at least two weeks. For most patients, this means wearing the retainers after dinner and throughout the night, then removing them before breakfast.
Nighttime Wear
03
Nighttime wear is sufficient for many patients, but not for everyone. The amount of retainer wear needed to maintain your results is unique to you. A retainer should fit comfortably when inserted. If it begins to feel tight, or you notice any movement of your teeth, increase your wear time. If your retainers do not become comfortable again, please contact our office.
Caring for Your Retainers
KEEP YOUR RETAINERS CLEAN AND PROTECTED
Proper care helps your retainers last longer and keeps them comfortable to wear. Cleaning them regularly and storing them safely will help prevent damage and maintain good oral hygiene.
Remember: If they're not in your face, they're in their case!
Retainer care tips:
Always wear your retainers on clean teeth.
Clean your retainers before putting them back in.
Use liquid hand soap or mild dish soap with a soft brush.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm or room temperature water.
Never use toothpaste, as it can scratch the retainer.
Avoid hot water, which can warp the retainer.
Store your retainers in their case whenever they're not being worn.
