4 Signs to See an Orthodontist

One of the most common myths about orthodontics is that you need a referral from your dentist before seeing an orthodontist. In reality, you can book a consultation with us at any time. If you're wondering whether it's the right time to schedule an appointment, here are four things you should look for.
When in doubt, remember that orthodontics is about M.O.R.E. than crooked teeth.
1) Middles
The middle of your upper and lower teeth should align closely with each other and with the centre of your upper lip. Using the natural dip in the middle of your upper lip as a guide, check whether your upper and lower front teeth line up while your lips are slightly apart and relaxed.
2) Overlap
Look at how much your upper front teeth overlap your lower front teeth when your back teeth are together. If the overlap is more than half or less than one-third of the lower teeth, it may be worth having an orthodontic evaluation. Also check whether all of your upper teeth make contact with the lower teeth when you bite down.
3) Reversed
Your upper teeth should normally sit slightly outside your lower teeth. If one or more upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, this may indicate a crossbite or underbite that could benefit from orthodontic treatment.
4) Eruption
Check that your teeth are developing evenly on both sides of your mouth. Permanent teeth should generally erupt within about six months of their matching tooth on the opposite side. If they do not, a tooth may be impacted, missing, or blocked by a baby tooth.
These four signs are just a few of the many things orthodontists evaluate during an examination. To learn about additional orthodontic concerns, visit our What to Look For page, or contact us to schedule your complimentary consultation.
