Week 1 of Orthodontic Health Month focused on the fundamentals of orthodontics. While most people have heard the term "orthodontist," many are unsure what orthodontists do or when treatment should begin. Here's a quick overview of the five most common questions about orthodontic care.

What Is Orthodontics?

According to the Canadian Dental Association, orthodontics is the process of straightening teeth so they look and function better. Braces, clear aligners, and other orthodontic appliances apply gentle, continuous pressure to gradually move teeth into healthier positions over time.

Who Can Benefit from Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for patients of all ages. Children, teens, and adults can all benefit from improving the alignment of their teeth and bite.

Healthy teeth and gums are important before beginning orthodontic treatment. If there are existing dental concerns, they may need to be addressed before treatment can safely begin.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age eight.

Early evaluations allow orthodontists to monitor growth and determine whether early intervention may help prevent more complex treatment later. Even if treatment is not needed immediately, regular monitoring can help identify the ideal time to begin.

Why Consider Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment offers benefits that go beyond improving the appearance of your smile, including:

  • Improving smile aesthetics and confidence.
  • Making teeth easier to brush and floss.
  • Supporting healthier bite function and long-term oral health.

How Do I Get Started?

The first step is to schedule a complimentary orthodontic consultation. You can contact Braces Doc by phone, email, or through our website to arrange your visit. While referrals from your dentist are always welcome, they are not required to book an appointment.

Next week, we'll take a closer look at some of the common signs that may indicate orthodontic treatment could be beneficial.
